Euro COT report
This page tracks speculative positioning in CME Euro FX futures: the latest net position, how it changed week on week, the long-short split and where the reading sits within stored history. It is the most direct public measure of how the market is positioned on EURUSD before you form your own view.

The contract: Euro FX futures (6E)
The 6E contract on the CME is the standard way institutions and speculators take a view on the euro. Each contract covers a fixed amount of euros priced in dollars, and the non-commercial category captures the funds and large traders who hold the contract as a directional bet rather than a hedge.
Euro FX is among the most liquid currency futures in the world, which makes its positioning data unusually reliable as a sentiment gauge. Thin contracts can show large percentage swings on a handful of trades; 6E positioning moves are backed by real volume.
What drives speculative euro positioning
Euro positioning tracks the expected gap between European Central Bank and Federal Reserve policy. When the ECB is expected to hold or hike while the Fed eases, speculators build long euro positions; the reverse expectation unwinds them. Because the euro area publishes country-level data for Germany, France and Italy alongside aggregate figures, positioning can whipsaw within a single week as national prints conflict.
Political risk is the euro's second driver. Elections, budget disputes and fragmentation fears have repeatedly pushed speculators short the euro even when the rate story argued otherwise, so a bearish reading here sometimes reflects headlines rather than economics.
Reading 6E against EURUSD
Because currency futures are quoted in US dollars per unit of the foreign currency, the lean reads directly onto pairs like EURUSD: a net long futures position is a bullish lean on the pair, a net short position a bearish one. No conversion is needed — what you see above is the direction speculators are positioned for.
Watch for divergence between positioning and price. If EURUSD rallies while the net long shrinks, the move is running on short covering or flows rather than fresh speculative conviction — a pattern that often precedes stalling. A rising net long alongside a rising price is the healthier trend signature.
How StraviaX uses euro positioning
Euro COT feeds the conviction layer on EURUSD and the euro crosses. A macro read that aligns with the direction speculators hold earns more conviction than one fighting a crowded position, but the positioning itself never moves the headline score — that stays macro-only.
How StraviaX calculates this
The figures come from the CFTC Commitments of Traders report, non-commercial (speculative) positions in the listed futures contract. The data is as of Tuesday and published on Friday; this page shows both dates and flags the data as delayed when the latest report is more than ten days old.
The range position compares the current net position only with the history StraviaX has stored (since January 2026; gold since May 2026). It is labelled honestly — "within its range since January 2026" — and is never described as a one-year or three-year extreme until the stored history covers that span.
Inside StraviaX, COT positioning shapes the conviction label on a pair read. It never drives the headline macro score, which is built from rates, growth, inflation, spending, labour data and data surprises.
Frequently asked questions
What is the euro COT report?
The CFTC's weekly breakdown of positioning in Euro FX futures. This page shows the speculative (non-commercial) net position, its weekly change and its place in stored history.
What does net long 6E mean for EURUSD?
Speculators are positioned for the euro to rise against the dollar — a bullish EURUSD lean. A net short position is a bearish lean.
When does euro COT data come out?
Every Friday, covering positions as of the previous Tuesday. The page shows both dates and flags the data if the latest report is more than ten days old.
Why did euro positioning move before the ECB meeting?
Speculators position for expected policy, not announced policy. Positioning often shifts in the weeks before a meeting as data changes what the market expects the ECB to do.
