Gold retail sentiment
This page tracks retail positioning in gold: the share of accounts long and short XAUUSD, whether the crowd is at an extreme, and the stored history behind the current reading. Gold's crowd behaves differently from any currency pair, and this page explains why that matters.

What the gold reading measures
The figure is the share of retail accounts long gold versus short it, from the broker aggregate behind the feed. Retail gold positioning has a structural long bias: many accounts hold gold as a standing hedge, so the long share spends far more time above half than any currency pair's does.
That bias changes how the extreme flag should be read. A reading that would be remarkable on EURUSD can be close to normal for gold, so the stored history below is the real reference — what matters is where today's split sits against gold's own recent range, not against a fifty-fifty line.
Why gold crowds are different
Gold attracts a different kind of retail flow: safe-haven buying during scares, inflation-hedge buying during price spikes, and dip-buying almost always. The crowd is often right about gold's long-run direction and wrong about its timing, which produces a familiar pattern of heavy retail longs just before sharp corrections.
Corrections in gold are fast because the metal trades on leverage in the retail market. When a crowded long book meets a strong dollar or a jump in real yields, the unwind feeds on itself. The extreme flag on this page is best read as a warning about that fragility, not as a call to short gold.
Sentiment versus COT on gold
The COT panel shows speculative positioning in COMEX gold futures alongside the dollar index. Gold futures read directly onto XAUUSD — net long the GC contract is a bullish lean on the metal — so there is no inversion to apply on the gold leg.
The most informative configuration is a gap between the two crowds: retail heavily long gold while speculators in the futures market have been trimming, or retail shaken out short while futures positioning stays long. The futures market holds the bigger, slower money, and its lean has historically been the one gold follows.
How StraviaX calculates this
The sentiment figures come from the MyFxBook retail positioning feed: the share of retail trading accounts currently long or short the pair. StraviaX stores its own daily snapshot of that feed, with history going back to 13 April 2026. The feed had an outage from 20 to 24 August 2026, and that gap is marked on the chart rather than filled in.
A reading is flagged as an extreme when at least 70% of accounts sit on one side of the pair. Extremes are read contrarian — a heavily one-sided crowd has less buying or selling power left on that side — but an extreme on its own is context, not a trade signal.
Inside StraviaX, retail sentiment is one of the supporting blocks that shape the conviction label on a pair read. It never drives the headline macro score, which is built from rates, growth, inflation, spending, labour data and data surprises.
Frequently asked questions
Why is retail usually long gold?
Many retail accounts treat gold as a permanent hedge rather than a trade, so the long share sits above half for long stretches. Read extremes against gold's own history on the chart, not against an even split.
Does the contrarian read work on gold?
At true extremes, crowded retail longs have often preceded sharp corrections, because leveraged longs unwind quickly when the dollar or real yields rise. But gold's uptrends can carry a crowded long book for months, so the flag is a fragility warning, not a short signal.
How does gold COT differ from gold sentiment?
The COT figures come from COMEX gold futures — larger, slower, institutional accounts reported weekly by the CFTC. The sentiment figures are retail accounts updated through the day. One shows where the big money sits; the other shows where the crowd sits.
What else should I check before trading gold?
The dollar's direction and US real yields drive gold more than any positioning read. The gold COT page covers the futures side, and the XAUUSD fundamental analysis page pulls the macro picture together.
