GBPJPY Fundamental Analysis

GBPJPY is a cross: it has no US dollar leg, and its price equals GBPUSD multiplied by USDJPY. Fundamentally it reflects the gap between a relatively high-rate Bank of England and a low-rate Bank of Japan, which makes it one of the classic carry pairs.

When UK inflation keeps the Bank of England restrictive while the Bank of Japan moves slowly, the rate gap supports the pound against the yen. Faster UK easing or a more hawkish Japan narrows it. UK CPI, wages and claimant count, and Japanese inflation and wage data, are the releases that move those expectations.

Because it combines a higher-volatility currency with a funding currency, GBPJPY can move sharply when risk appetite changes; futures positioning in both sterling and yen helps show how crowded that carry is.
