USDJPY Fundamental Analysis

USDJPY prices the dollar in yen, and it is the major pair most tied to interest-rate differentials. Japan kept rates near zero for many years while US rates sat much higher, which made borrowing yen to hold dollars (the carry trade) attractive. Any change in that gap, from a more hawkish Bank of Japan or a more dovish Fed, tends to move the pair.

Because the Bank of Japan moves in small steps and communicates a ceiling for its policy rate, every decision is closely watched. Japanese inflation, wages and the unemployment rate shape how far it can go; US payrolls, CPI and claims shape the Fed side.

The yen also acts as a funding and safe-haven currency, so speculative positioning in yen futures can swing quickly and amplify moves when the rate story shifts.
